Robby Collins one man comedy show “Son of Carol” comes to GCC Braam
If you enjoy a good comedy show – this promises to be a winner. Robby Collins’, ‘Son of Carol’ is the new one-man comedy show from one of South Africa’s most prominent comedians. It was in 2014 when he performed his first one-man show, ‘That Bushman’s Crazy’ and after finding success across the country, the show won the Standard Bank Ovation Award at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival during that year.
Mirroring the success of his previous one-man tour, ‘Son of Carol’ has already enjoyed sold out status in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermarizburg and Nelspruit. The show is a hilarious introspection of a young man who is finding his place in this world and finding the ‘funny’ in all the crazy situations that a young comedian encounter.
The Emmy nominated comedian possesses a high level of integrity, delivers comedy content solely based on honesty. He is the kind of comedian that seeks the ‘funny’ in experiences that are usually deemed painful.
Robby is the only comedian to have opened for Trevor Noah on all his one-man shows from Day Walker (2010) to Nationwild (2014) and Pay Back The Funny (2017), performing to sold out audiences on the biggest stages in South Africa.
Comedy powerhouses such as Marc Lottering, Eugene Khoza, John Vlismas and Kagiso Lediga have all called on him to be their opening act. Frequent appearances at prime events such as Blacks Only, Kings and Queens of Comedy and Comedy Central Live at Parkers, culminated in the 2013 debut of Robby’s very first one-man show.
Having performed internationally on comedy stages in Australia, Canada, Switzerland and the US, Robby affirms that the room space of The Goliath Comedy Club – Braamfontein on 9 de Beer Street is ideal, based on this particular international standard.
The Goliath Comedy Club – Braamfontein is a newly renovated space that is located on the lower level of the Bannister Hotel. The venue seats up to 100 guests in cinema style, giving The Goliath Comedy Club – Braamfontein a ‘New York’ underground comedy room look and feel, which ultimately satisfies Robby’s preference of performing intimate comedy. The stage set will bring to life a living room of a true coloured working class home and in the infamous Robby Collins style, each night will end off with an afterparty with a few high profile surprise entertainment acts.
In a trice, Robby Collins has risen from a lanky, long-limbed actor on the Durban theatre circuit, to an artist of high acclaim – not just a nation-touring comedian with his own one-man show, but also a feature film actor and an Emmy-nominated writer, where he formed part of the Emmy Nominated writing team on Late Night News with Loyiso Gola.
